A Legacy to be Remembered

Former Chicago Bear and fifth all time leading tackler in Arkansas State history Mike Malham, became the head coach of Cabot in 1981 and is set to retire after 38 seasons. Malham is the second winningest head coach in Arkansas high school football history. Coach Malham brought two state and 15 conference championships to Cabot along with an undefeated season in 2000. Coach Malham has coached some great players and makes them, become not only great football players but great young men. Some of the more notable players have been Jarrod Barnes, Bryce Petty, and currently TJ Rogers and Brad Morales. Malham’s legacy will be at the top in Cabot Panther History and he is a Panther for life.

He is a 501 coach of the year nominee every season and currently he is coaching a 501 senior all state running back, TJ Rogers. “It’s been great to learn and experience the game from a legend like Malham,” Rogers said. “We want to give him his 300 career win and send him off with one more title, He wants to be at War Memorial Stadium on December 1st, and we are going to get him there.” Malham’s gritty style of play, with the dead T formation, the run option with his quarterback and running backs, makes players like Rogers very special. Players that are under the wing of Malham are not only successful on the field but off the field as well,as there are plenty of panthers playing college ball or some even pro ball.

The Panther fans love watching their team play on ‘Friday Nights’. In particular on fan thinks Panther football is something that he will always watch. “Playing for Cabot a couple years back, and now watching from the bleachers, I have an all time respect for Coach Malham,” former student Jaden Dickson said. “The one thing I want the team to achieve this season will be capturing Malham his third state championship that would be awesome,” Dickson said. There are generations upon generations that have seen the Panther’s success that Malham has brought. Alumni will always be grateful for what he has done here.

Coach Malham could not have done this without the supporting cast that include Coaches Jay, Black, Bing, Rogers and so many others that make the players great under his system. “It’s been a privilege to work with a hall of famer and an all time great one day I’ll look back on it and think of how I worked with one of if not the best high school coach in Arkansas high school history,” Coach Clark Bing said. Malham’s testament of work and love for this program will never be forgotten and has shaped the team the way it is now. “He is a believer in hard work and effort,” Bing said. “If you have that you can succeed at anything in life.”.This was truly a legacy to remember “We are in the presence of a true legend and we need to enjoy every moment of it.”
