To finish up the Autopsy section of Lisa Toms’ Crime Scene Investigation class, students performed their own autopsies. Due to a lack of materials, Toms put a spin on the procedure by having her students perform their autopsies on bananas.
Toms wanted to give her students a different outlook on what goes on during an autopsy by doing this activity.
“It’s one thing to give instructions about specific topics and procedures,” Toms said. “When a student is actually able to perform the procedure themselves, they gain a better perspective and deeper level of understanding of the topic.”
It seemed as though doing the procedure not only gave the students a chance to remember lessons from their first Criminal Justice class but also allowed them to have a little fun while participating in the activity. Senior Seth Standrige declared his enjoyment for his participation in the lesson.
“I thought it was so fun and so innovative in an amazing way to get us interested in dead bodies,” Standrige said. “I didn’t have to think about our old lessons too much, it just kinda all came back to me immediately.”
