Lady Panther Softball is a well-known program here at CHS. From their outstanding records to their conference and state wins, every year proves to be greater than the last. This year, they started a new tradition, called the Turkey Series, right before students were out for Thanksgiving Break.
The Turkey Series consists of three scrimmages where two teams would face off against each other over three days. Head Softball Coach Christopher Cope decided that Seniors would draft the teams to their liking. Cope believed that this series would be very beneficial to his players in the long run.
“We gave the Seniors an opportunity to choose their teams,” Cope said. “We wanted to create a little competition the week before we leave for Thanksgiving.”
It wasn’t just Cope that was excited for the friendly competition. Assistant Softball Coach Tori Willborg was impressed by the talent showcased during the scrimmages.
“We saw a lot of great offensive and defensive plays,” Willborg said. “Young and old players came together to play their hardest, and that was all we were asking for.”
Once the two teams were created, they were given the names Red Team and Grey Team. Grey team came out on top, winning two out of three of the scrimmages. Junior Callie Griffin, who was on the winning team, was beyond proud of her team for pushing through the scrimmages.
“I am very proud of my team for winning the series,” Griffin said. “I think we had the best attitudes during the games and kept pushing to get ahead and that’s what it takes to win games.”
Griffin wasn’t the only one who was ecstatic about her team winning the series. Junior Mileena Poe, who was also on the winning team, had lots of things to brag about.
“It was a true testament to our hard work,” Poe said. “We faced many challenges along the way, but our strong pitching, solid defense, and consistent hitting helped us stay ahead.”
