On Monday, March 17, the Cabot Lady Softball team took on the undefeated Sheridan Yellowjackets, breaking their 2-year winning streak in a 7 to 2 ballgame.
However, Sheridan wasn’t an easy team to defeat. It took the entire Cabot team, including some younger players, to conquer Sheridan’s defense and offense. One of these players was freshman Makayla Walton, who stepped up to play in an injured teammate’s spot on Varsity. Walton hit a grand slam home run in the middle of the game, allowing 4 runs to be scored in a single inning.
“Every night before a game, I pray to God to bless me and my teammates and I tell myself that I have been working for this since I was a little kid,” Walton said. “When I was in the box I told myself I needed to score those runs. Once I saw the ball go over the fence, I knew everything I was working on was showing during the game.”
It wasn’t just Cabot’s players that were excited about the win. Assistant Softball Coach Grace Neal believed that this game was one of the team’s best this season.
“I think we finally played together as a team,” Neal said. “We changed our mental game and everyone picked each other up and realized that this is a team sport and not an individual one. We were loose and free, and that’s when a team plays their best.”
