On April 12, students had the chance to see a live demonstration of how to reconstruct a torn ACL on a real cadaver. The event, sponsored by Midsouth Orthopedics, took place in the CHS auditorium.
The event taught Medical Academy students the proper way to perform an ACL repair. It also showed students the equipment required and explained to students the requirements to perform the surgery, leaving many students hoping that CHS continues to demonstrate surgeries like this one. One of those students, senior Lainey Crumpler, hoped that CHS continues to help its students choose what they thought was best for their future careers.
“I really do hope Cabot continues to host these events,” Crumpler said. “It sparks students’ interest in the medical field and can be really beneficial for students’ next steps.”
Many students thought that the demonstration, though informational, grossed out more than a few students. Junior Holly Woodruff thought that she should have been warned.
“I mean, I thought it was really cool, but I didn’t think that we would be able to see inside the knee,” Woodruff said.
Some students, however, thought the inside of the knee intrigued them, saying that the demonstration was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Sophomore Madison Walcott thought that the graft was one of the coolest things the school has done.
“My favorite part was when we saw them remove the tissue from the knee,” Walcott said. “It was just so cool to see how they performed the surgery.”
