Abnormal Psychology courses taught students more about mental health than many other courses. Students evaluated the importance of understanding others’ mental health outside of the norm.
Maintaining good communication with peers can strengthen relationships and make people feel more comfortable sharing their feelings. Senior Natalie Eoff spoke about how stronger communication in relationships can reveal things about the person you are speaking to.
¨When in relationships, people should first try to understand someone’s morals, and then you will have a better understanding of who they are,” Eoff said.
Sometimes, things that are commonly known as nonexistent to students may affect their mental health. Eoff understood what it meant to students navigating school and feeling afraid.
¨I would probably say school when thinking about what affects people most,¨ Eoff said.
Getting to know someone is something to take seriously when understanding someone’s mind. Sophomore Brooklyn Bellar expressed how she felt about the impact of getting to know someone on a deep and intimate level when dealing with each other’s thoughts.
¨You should first become friends and establish trust,¨ Bellar said. ¨And it is important to learn about them fully so you are capable of understanding their mind.¨
Awareness is key in building relationships when it comes to knowing someone. Bellar believed in the importance of becoming aware of the people you surround yourself with.
¨Some people bully others and take advantage of them,¨ Bellar said. ¨That can reveal sensitivity so getting to know who someone is outside of what you see every day is a must.¨
There are many interesting things to be learned about in this particular course. Junior Annabelle Dove understood that there is still a lot to be discovered about Psychology and the mind.
¨ Everyone’s mental health is different,¨ Dove said. ¨It is important to understand that Psychology is not fully researched, and you have to approach it differently and be patient.¨
There is something peculiar and fascinating about the human brain. Dove considered how she felt about those who struggle with said mental health conditions
¨I am very interested in the way others think,¨ Dove said. ¨I really have a lot of curiosity about people and their thoughts because you never know the way someone thinks.¨
Establishing a warm environment can make others feel comfortable and more capable of being vulnerable or expressing themselves. Sophomore Chloe Davis believed that the best way to get others to speak to you would be to make sure they feel safe.
¨Having a safe environment is nice,¨ Davis said. ¨When someone is struggling, you should make sure they’re not afraid of opening up and always allow them room to speak.¨
Dove spoke words of wisdom when describing the seriousness of teen mental health and how it can affect you and your peers.
¨If someone is having a rough time mentally,¨ Dove said. ¨They may be harmful towards themselves or other people they talk to.¨
