The Conway Wampus Cats traveled an hour to Cabot Friday night to shred the Panthers, 56-7. Under the bright lights a 70-degree fall weather.
Panther fans donned their pink outfits that matched the Breast Cancer Awareness theme of the night to support their Panthers in this conference matchup.
It took the Wampus Cats four minutes to land their first touchdown and Conway never looked back after that. Keeping their momentum, the Wampus Cats scored another touchdown few minutes later, and with the extra point being good, the score was updated to 14-0.
At the end of the first quarter, the Panthers attempted to kick a field goal to grab some points; however, the Wampus Cats were able to block their efforts, ending the first quarter with a 14-0 score in favor of Conway.
Both teams kept each other at a stalemate for the first four minutes of the second quarter, but then the Wampus Cats ramped it up and scored from the Panther’s 20-yard line. With the field goal point, the score widened to 21-0.
The Wampus Cats kept building on their lead and a few minutes later their quarterback scored on a 30-yard run line. The field goal was not good however, holding the score at 28-0.
With just three minutes left in the second quarter, the Wampus Cats scored a final touchdown for the first half, driving from the 45-yard line, which gave Conway a 35-0 lead and put the Mercy rule into effect. points.
Right as the third quarter began the Wampus Cats burst through the Panther’s defenses and scored again. Add in the extra point and Cabot was facing a 42-point deficit.
Though the Panthers were slow to score, they did put points on the board in the third quarter with a touchdown scored by Evan Mathys. Kicker Dean Hayer was good with the extra point. But those seven points would be it for the Panthers.
With four minutes left on the clock in the third, the Wampus Cats retaliated by scoring another touchdown. The third quarter ended with the Wampus Cats up 49-7.
The fourth quarter opened with what was much of the same, with Conway continuing to have full control of the game. With just two minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Wampus Cats scored another touchdown and added a good extra point, setting the final score at 56-7.
Halftime was a bright spot for the home crowd as the Cabot High School Marching Band put on a rousing performance called “This Land.”
Cabot, now 2-4 on the year, will take on Pulaski Academy at home Friday.
