For all sports teams, a place to play is essential. Whether that be a court or an arena, not having a place to practice or scrimmage can be detrimental not just to a player’s development, but to the team as a whole.
During the new installation of stadium lights at the Cabot softball field, heavy machinery drove around the turf field. The machines caused the turf to be damaged, with little holes that could hurt a player, or worse.
While most sports teams would take a break during the rebuilding process, the softball team prided itself on using the field to its advantage. For outfielders, the entire outfield area was pulled up, with the underground concrete showing.
Even though the outfield was out of commission, the players still got their work in other places. Senior right fielder Mileena Poe was able to get work on the infield area, even though the drills were limited.
“We did our basic every day drills even though the outfield was being rebuilt,” Poe said. “The infield was a little small, but we still got our work in.”
The field was fully built, with a new outfield for the players to enjoy. Even though the rebuilding process took about a month, Assistant Coach Grace Neal could tell that the players enjoyed the smaller practices and that they deserved the much-needed downtime.
“The girls have been going since the second week of school,” Neal said. “I think they really did enjoy just doing the basics for a little bit.”
